He pretends to be injured to get her back, but also sees what the strain is doing to the football player who injured him.

Eve Knew Her Apples (1945)

He then decides to take her back to Hollywood to collect the reward for her return. But now love has entered the mix, and must be resolved with his job and her engagement to another.
